On 19th October the band took part in the Wansbeck Entertainment Contest, staged at Newbiggin Sports & Community Centre. The contest made a return after a 10 year break and featured a broad section of bands each playing a 20 minute own-choice entertainment program.

Durham Miners’ Band got off to a rousing start with John Williams’ ‘Liberty Fanfare’ before Hugh Morris performed the trombone solo ‘Why Did I Choose You’. ‘The Cossack’ march was then followed by James Curnow’s ‘Black is the Colour of my True Love’s Hair’ (from the Appalachian Mountain Folk Song Suite) and the band finished off their performance with the ‘Cossack Wedding Dance’ from Peter Graham’s Call of the Cossacks.

Adjudicator Kevin Wadsworth was suitably impressed with the band’s performance, awarding them 184 points and 6th place overall – the highest placed 2nd Section band and finishing above all the 1st Section competitors as well.
